Irish islands - Clare Island, County Mayo

Clare Island (Oilean Cliara in Irish) lies off the west coast of Ireland at the entrance to Clew Bay. Famous for a pirate queen, Granuaile or Grace O'Malley in the 1500's, who visited Queen Elizabeth 1. The island's population is about 140 people, sustained by tourism, sheep farming and a salmon farm. I have visited the island since the late 80's and with an interest in island communities I did this photo essay of Clare Island off Mayo in 2007.
