Drift netting for wild salmon, Achill Island

In July 2006 I spent a day with Achill islander Tom Corrigan in a currach driftnetting for salmon off Dooega, Achill Island, County Mayo. In 2007 drift netting at sea for salmon was banned because wild salmon stocks were declining in rivers. Since drift netting was banned, however two years later, no increase in salmon returning to Irish rivers has occurred. One wonders why? According to sea temperature records the sea around Ireland is getting warmer and warm water marine species are moving into Irish waters.
